Hello

I thought of another good pairing when I was doing other recent ones. Getting "Hell" for the Heaven & Hell list pulled up a lot of "Hello" songs and doing the "Old" list got Hello Old Friend by EC. I noticed a lot of good "Hello" songs, so here's my ten.
Hello Goodbye, of course, is the godfather of Hello and Goodbye, so I couldn't put it in either list. You want different #1's, right?

10) Hello Monday - Ocean Colour Scene
I'm not sure what to call this type of OCS song, but there are quite a few of them. It's pretty much just Simon's vocals and an acoustic with a little ambience in keyboards and background vocals. I love them, but they tend to gel into one after hearing a bunch of them.

9) Hello Oskar - Our Lady Peace
I whine a little about OLP going a little more mainstream with their last few albums, but then a song like this from an earlier album has never clicked with me, either. It might not be that, though, since this one just always struck me as something very 90's sounding. It's one of the only songs from Clumsy that I don't love.

8) Come Downstairs And Say Hello - Guster
Guster has faded on me a bit in the last few years. They've been pretty inactive and had a weird phase of being trendy a few years ago during their Spring college tour. They've always been relatively college band trendy, it just never affected my I guess. Anyway, this is one of their more elaborate songs. It starts off simple and builds bigger; one of those songs that feels like several smaller songs put together perfectly.

7) Hello Old Friend - Eric Clapton
It didn't make my "old" list. It's just one of EC's poppier songs. It was a single, too. The thing with EC is his albums are always like this: the singles are catchy or poppy or whatever but the rest of the album is much better, much deeper. I like the song, but in the same way you like an old movie that you realize isn't that good anymore.

6) Say Hello To The Pope - James Dean Bradfield
If I hadn't heard this song and you just played intro, I'd probably think it was a George Harrison song or at least had something to do with Jeff Lynne. But it's JDB and sticks out like a sore thumb on his solo album. I really love when band members do solo albums (while still in the band) that don't sound anything like the band. I'm not sure that made total sense, so I'll put it this way: There's no way this song would make it on a Manic Street Preachers album, but I'm glad he recorded it somewhere.

5) Hello There - Cheap Trick
If you've played Rock Band 2, you know this song. Personally, I first met it on Cheap Trick At Budokan. There aren't many songs that open a concert better, huh? I like when songs are ridiculously simple lyrically but still good.

4) Hello Sunshine - Super Furry Animals
This would be higher. But I had an ex that made me watch The O.C. when it was first on. And since then I can't listen to this song without picturing the scene where Summer takes her top off in front of Seth and this starts playing. I hate that I still know their names. (Live vid.)

3) Hello - Oasis
Yet again, I need to say it. Oasis are (yes, are... you know they'll be back) the best at putting their best foot forward with intro tracks. It's also one of my favorite songs to play on guitar with the wah pedal. (Here's a shitty quality video, which, I think, was ripped straight from the There & Then DVD.)

2) Hello It's Late - Stone Temple Pilots
Shangri-La Dee Da was a weird album. It had possibly the worst album title ever, it came at a time where STP was hardly relevant, and the first single was one of the poppiest songs STP has recorded. But Hello It's Late reeks of Beatles influence and I love it. Even the video (here) is Beatles with Scott looking so 1969-1970 John- long hair, bushy beard, white suit. The opening chords, the bass, the vocals, everything is beautiful. I love the song enough that it always pulls me back to listen to that whole album. Nothing else on there is strong enough to keep me attached, but this one song makes me love the whole album nonetheless. That's a strong track.

1) If You See Her, Say Hello - Bob Dylan
Californication is my favorite show. This is my favorite scene. I've commented on this song before and alluded to that scene, so this time I'm actually linking to the scene. Hank says it all right there.
