And here's part two of my "Hello Goodbye" lists. If you want a little sub-list, I can rank the (studio) tracks from the album above... I feel like it's relevant and easy enough to do:4) What A Bringdown: Not that it's bad, it's just the best song after the top three and unfortunately there are only four. It's too frantic/busy.
3) Anyone For Tennis: Fate is setting up the chessboard while Death rolls out the dice. Anyone for tennis? Wouldn't that be nice? Lyrics don't get much niftier.
2) Doing That Scrapyard Thing: I can't get over the drums in this one. I know it's Ginger Baker, so every track is amazing, the drums are just catchy in this one. I love the vocal melody, too.
1) Badge: Co-written by George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Enough said. One of the best rock songs ever.
And now for the real list:
10) Goodbye John Frost - Pete Ham
I'm just really confused about everything around the albums of Pete Ham demos that were released. I love them, but I don't know how much was worked up on top of what he left versus how much he had completed or whatever. So I listen to them mostly with confusion. This one is very typical of Golders Green; short, snappy, rough. I like it, but that confusion and the feeling of incompletion hangs over me when I'm listening to it.
9) Goodbye Little World - Remy Zero
An example of a weaker album closer. But I guess Fair would be a really somber way to end Villa Elaine.
8) Goodbye Forever - Alkaline Trio
This is the only list you will ever see with Pete Ham and Alkaline Trio back-to-back. I'm messed up. I'm not as into the earlier Alkaline Trio stuff as I probably should be. I have nothing against punk, it's just that when you see a punk band evolve into something richer musically, it makes it hard to look back at their punk stuff and appreciate it as much.
7) Say Goodbye Good - The Promise Ring
This one kinda sucks since it's pretty much the last Promise Ring song. There's a track after it, sure, but Feed The Night isn't as much a full song as Say Goodbye Good. I, unlike most Promise Ring fans in my experience, love Wood/Water. It's definitely a step down from Very Emergency, sure, but it's a good album all the same. Stop Playing Guitar is still one of my all time favorite songs, along with one of my favorite videos. I'd literally kill for the guitar in that video. Anyway, the song starts off really slow and I don't like the first minute or so, but it builds into something great. Here's a video for Say Goodbye Good and, because I said too much about it to not include it, the video for Stop Playing Guitar. I am a fair listmaker.
6) Till The Next Goodbye - The Rolling Stones
I really like this song, don't get me wrong. But there's something about it that I remember from the first time I ever heard it that I feel like it's where I first heard the Stones going downhill from the peak. I know that makes it sound like I don't like the song, but it's hard to explain. I like it but feel like I shouldn't. There's definitely one thing I really don't like about the song. I think it's either the drums or the piano. There's just something that is played too excessively for the tempo and style of the song.
5) Goodbye Daughters Of The Revolution - The Black Crowes
I'm getting sick of justifying them in my lists. So I pass this time. Goodbye Daughters Of The Revolution. It's a good song. Deal? The official video is kinda weak, though. Looks like something you could make in PowerPoint in half an hour. Anywhere, here it is.
4) Goodbye Suicide - Nicky Wire
This song is horrible. I feel like I should hate it. Some of the stuff on Nicky's album makes me feel like he meant to sound like he wasn't trying. But for some reason it makes me love it more. The less Nicky cares, the more I love him. Also, with this, each list in my Hello Goodbye pairing has a song from a solo Manic Street Preachers member. Nifty. You can only try so fucking hard.
3) Never Say Goodbye - Bob Dylan
Planet Waves is an grossly underrated album. That's all I have to say about that.
2) Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye - The Black Crowes
I just put this at the top of the "Goodbye" list, so I don't think I need to say anything else here. But it's #2 this time...
1) Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley
So. Fucking. Amazing. Jeff Buckley's one of few artists that I hold so personally that I don't like talking about him. I think a lot of his fans are the same, though. I tend to avoid putting him in any of my lists for that very reason, though. But ignoring this song would be a total sin. The lyrics are absolutely perfect. (Official video here.)
